In over 40 years of ordering from the USA I have NEVER had a problem or lost a package and I have NEVER asked for insurance and ALWAYS for  USPS First Class International, even for my brass models.  Maybe the package takes some extra time but it gets there. Are we in a hurry? It’s a hobby……. Unfortunately I have no influence over the rates of PostNL: if they change I have to go along. They are the cheapest and reliable. Paid and delivered items cannot be returned.

Damaged items (which I never had in all those years) I will replace free of charge (including postage and packaging ) but you have to return the damaged item to me at your expense beforehand.
